How to apply for JAKIM Halal certification — the A-Z blueprint
Everything a food manufacturer needs for JAKIM Halal: prerequisites, the Halal Assurance System (HAMS/SJH), MYHALAL portal submission, the audit, and final approval.
A valid MeSTI certificate is a prerequisite — haven't got it yet? Start with our MeSTI guide below.
1
Halal prerequisites
Set these foundations before entering the portal — or expect rejection.
MeSTI certification — hold a valid MeSTI certificate, or be in the final stages of getting one.
Halal committee — form an internal committee of at least 2 Muslims, one being a Muslim staff in a key position.
Material Halal verification — every raw material, additive and packaging needs a valid Halal certificate from JAKIM or a JAKIM-recognised Foreign Halal Certification Body (FHCB).
Premise independence — contract manufacturers (OEM) must have full control of the production line, or dedicated Halal lines.
2
Halal Assurance Management System (HAMS/SJH)
The core of the certification — Halal integrity control across your whole operation.
Halal policy — documented and signed by top management, committing to Halal compliance.
Halal manual — your Halal control procedures, flowcharts and risk mitigation in one document.
Flowcharting — production flowcharts from raw material storage to dispatch; every step verified for Halal integrity.
Training — regular Halal awareness training for all staff (e.g. no non-Halal food in production areas).
3
Documentation & the MYHALAL portal
The online submission is precise and document-heavy.
Product specification — a detailed spec for every product you want certified.
Supplier matrix — a complete list of raw materials with their Halal certificates. One missing cert for a minor ingredient halts the whole process.
Portal submission — register at myhalal.halal.gov.my; upload the Halal manual, premise layout and process flowcharts.
4
Audit & verification
JAKIM auditors perform a thorough onsite physical and document audit.
Physical inspection — warehouse, storage areas and production lines.
Document review — HAMS implementation logs and staff training records.
Traceability check — auditors pick a random product batch and ask for full trace-back to raw material sources.
5
Final approval
Corrective action (CAR) — fix any non-conformances within the stipulated timeframe.
Halal Certification Panel — a positive audit report is tabled to the JAKIM Halal Panel for final approval.
Certificate issuance — collect the certificate and display it prominently at your premise.
★Pro tips (save yourself months)
Ingredient vigilance — don't accept “Halal-status” letters from suppliers. JAKIM only accepts valid Halal certificates from recognised bodies.
Zero tolerance — strict “No Pork, No Alcohol” policy on the premise, including what staff bring into the cafeteria and production area.
Engage early — struggling with HAMS/SJH documentation? An experienced Halal executive or registered consultant can save you months of document revisions.
The audit is won in your daily records.
JAKIM's traceability check picks a random batch and asks you to trace it back to raw materials. Boss Buddy AI for Operation gives you exactly that: batch traceability with one-tap recall, certificate expiry alerts (company + staff), production and QC logs — a system your workers actually use daily.
